Small Bathroom Vanities - Three Key Considerations when Remodeling

Small bathroom vanities can give a tiny space elegance and grace.

It is typical to squeeze a vanity, a toilet and bathtub and/or shower into a small bathroom (50 square feet is considered small).

So let’s consider the design options for such a small space.

Well, increasing the floor space is out of the question, so instead your small bathroom needs some careful planning.

ONE: You can start by rethinking the bathroom vanity.

Although it is the most used and useful of the bathroom furniture, the vanity is also the most space-intensive, and in a small bathroom it can really get in the way.

But the importance of the vanity cannot be ignored. After all, it holds up the sink, hides the plumbing, presents a convenient space to compliment the mirror.

The cabinet provides storage space, which means that its base can use up much of the available floor area.

So the size and materials that you choose for your small bathroom vanity is extremely important.

There are several options available to reduce the footprint of small bathroom vanities:

• It can be raised on slim legs to give extra floor space for your feet underneath.

• A half-width counter with a full width basin can be another space saving option.

• Another approach is to replace the bench top with a stand-alone basin on a pedestal.

• You can opt to build tall, thin storage cupboards alongside the mirror, thus evening-up the space in upper and lower quadrants of the bathroom.

• Then there is the corner cabinet option to make maximum use of each inch of bathroom space – but we will come back to that in a moment.

TWO: Using the matching materials throughout the bathroom will help greatly to make a small bathroom look bigger.

Some people use many and conflicting building materials.

We’ve all seen it before, that tiny room with its wood vanity cabinet, laminated counter, enameled or plastic sink, chrome faucet, painted wallboard, vinyl floor covering, tiling around the tub, a plastic shower curtain and a porcelain tub and toilet.

Even if you need to use many materials, at least limit the color scheme to allow your eyes to glide more calmly across your small bathroom.

THREE: Lighting can also be a great way to make a small bathroom look much bigger.

If you have just one light in the center of the room, it limits what can be seen at night or on a dark day (You know, when you want to look for that skin anomaly you ran your fingers over earlier).

If it is at all possible to install a skylight then the bathroom should be given consideration.

But if that is not an option then using lights in other places, like around the mirror, will help make the room look bigger.

Now, let’s get back to the corner vanity idea.

Given that the vanity is the most important and used item in the bathroom, fitting a small bathroom vanity in the corner can be a great way to improve the appearance of small bathrooms.

Whether you are after an antique style or a more contemporary bathroom vanity set, a corner bathroom vanity unit can be adapted to your particular requirements.

So think about how much storage space you need.

For example, do you need shelving for towels or a door rack for a hair drier?

So, a corner vanity can be an efficient way to make the most of a small space.

So keeping these thoughts in mind will result in an efficient, pleasant room which all the family can use even if your bathroom is the smallest room in the house.
