The Bathroom Vanity and My Childhood Memories

The Bathroom vanity! I grew up in the country in a three room house the first six years of my life where we lived with my grandmother and indoor bathrooms were a luxury.

A luxury that we didn’t have. But what we did have was a beautiful face bowl with a water pitcher that sat inside of it and a tin tub for bathing.

The face bowl sat on top of a three legged table that my uncle had made to fit into the corner of the room.

The table had a drawer and two shelves, one shelf on top and one shelf on the bottom.

This is what we now call bathroom vanities. The face bowl and pitcher were kept on the bottom shelf until we needed to use it.

It had replaced a tin pale that had been used for washing our face in the mornings. It was beautiful to me, after all it was made of clay. My Great Grandmother could work magic with Georgia Red Clay and water, she even made a cast with it when my cousin broke his ankle.

She used a stainless steel mixing bowl as her mold for the face bowl. She put a varnish on it to seal it so that there would be no water leaks.

When it was ready for use, my grandmother sat it on the table on top of a crocheted place mat she’d made. Talk about a work of art, it was magnificent.

When we moved into the city, the face bowl came with us. There was also the luxury of indoor bathrooms and sinks.

The bathroom sinks were by no means as pretty as the one that my Great Grandmother has made and it had a hole in it, Oh My!

When I look at the beauty and the material of today’s Bathroom Vanities, I can’t help but remember the beauty of my Great Grandmother’s work.

It was simple and elegant, made out of necessity and with love.

Some of the Bathroom Vanities that are available today have that same simplicity and elegance and provide you with choices that weren’t available when I was a child.

Ceramics, copper, frosted glass, granite and marble, these are but a few of the materials available in today’s world of vanities.

My Great Grandmothers face bowl reminded me of what we know today as Art Deco Vanities, always expressing a simple but yet creative edge.

As you look at the choices that are available for you to purchase when designing or remodeling your bathroom, it’s important to remember that the bathroom vanity will set the look and feel for the entire room.
